Read 5 important facts about this Central American nation:

Mestizo population

Mestizo is an ethnic group with Spanish and Native American descent. Due to the effects of Spanish colonisation, the Mestizo population is mainly found in Latin America. Eighty-Six percent of El Salvador is Mestizo. The Mestizo culture is the most prominent in the country.

High homicide rate

El Salvador has a strong gang culture. This has resulted in high crime rate. A report from the law and order authorities estimate that the homicide rate in the country was 50.3 per 1,00,000 in 2018. This is one of the highest murder rate in the world even exceeding the figures of Mexico. Rivalry among different gangs operating in El Salvador is the major reason behind the inflated murder rate.

Disaster prone

El Salvador is a disaster prone region frequented by devastating earthquakes and hurricanes. As the country lies exactly on the convergence zone of both the Cocos Plate and the Caribbean Plate, there is an increased risk from frequent earthquakes. Low pressure system in the Pacific Ocean and the Tropical depression are the reasons behind storms that often lead to destructive floods.

Immigration and emigration

Due to limited opportunities in the country, Salvadorans migrate to the highly developed neighbourhood especially to the U.S seeking better opportunities. El Salvador’s economy is heavily dependent on private remittances from Salvadorans living abroad. Due to the income inflow, the younger Salvadoran population is educated well and are on an active scout for employment in the formal sector. To fill the resultant gap in the informal sector, job seekers from the neighbouring Honduras and Nicaragua are migrating to El Salvador.
