In 2009, a film named 3 Idiots captured the imagination of film lovers. The film revolves around the friendship of three college mates and their reunion after long ten years, starring Amir Khan, R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor and Boman Irani.
The climax of the film was shoot in the picturesque Leh town. Leh is a cold desert region with a low population and has some picturesque places like Pangong Lake. After the release of the film, Leh became a tourist hub. Although tourism brought life to the town with buzzing economic activity, there arise another issue. The garbage problem.
Waste to revenue
Recently, the Leh administration came up with a novel idea to deal with the garbage problem. The administration had converted tonnes of waste into recyclable products and decorative items. The remaining waste was sold to scrap dealers. A critical response to the garbage problem had helped the ecologically sensitive region.
The administration, in order to turn waste into revenue generating products, had come up with a project named Tsang-da. The project aims at sustainable waste management in rural as well as city regions in the Leh district. This is a significant step as the region is a source as well as the pathway of several cross-border rivers including the Indus.
