Today’s world can be summarised with the help of an analogy from smartphone evolution. ‘From everyone yearn for a smartphone to everyone has a smartphone’. The smartphone industry has transformed the life of the people. Days without smartphones are synonymous with days without food. Truly, smartphones’ influence among the people are unparalleled. They are their life saver as well as their soul hackers.
Even important decisions of one’s life are taken from the wisdom gained as a result of googling on smartphones. They can act both as a soul stopper, and a deadly dagger that could release the souls eternally. Smartphones flashes the latest breaking news, new wisdoms and knowledge, the latest fashion vogue and informations about revolutionary technologies etc.
We are familiar with the messages popping up in our social media feed requesting for blood and organ donations as well as requests for monetary help to save the terminally ill. Smartphones gave us much reach and these messages are delivered to the right audience within few seconds. Often, families of the ill could raise the requisite fund within few days. Smartphones have turned into devices that could effectively save ones precious life.
Innate talent booster:
Smartphones also helped people to showcase their talents to a wider world. They had become overnight stars and had a complete change in their course of life. Revolutionary Chinese applications like Tik Tok, Musically etc. are now a parallel space for people to showcase their innate ability.
Virtual intellectual class:
The smartphone era has also helped the rural folks and small town intellectuals to express their views and to emerge into a whole new league of elite intellectual class. They are in a virtual tinsel town although they are physically present in the remotest areas of a nation.
In India, market disrupting entry of service provider Reliance Jio Infocomm brought many Indians to the fold of internet. Reliance Jio’s entry was a revolution in India’s ambitious push for transition into a digital savvy population and thereby into a digital economy. Their free internet connectivity offer had ushered an era of internet revolution in India.
This has made smartphones more popular among the Indian people. With the evolution of technologies that are assisting in the production of smartphones with the economies of scale and that too by converting them into easily available screes, the concerns also outweighs the benefits.
The smartphone society has to deal with a flurry of fake news, extremist propaganda, social media induced violence etc. People often cross the neutral political viewpoint and express their opinions with severe extremist undertones. This could hurt the sentiments, goodwill and social fabric in the society.
There is a semblance of proof that smartphones could aid the growth of terrorism. This calls for severe infrastructure overhaul in the law and order machinery of the concerned states to counter cyber security threats. There is a need for proper legislation, and their implementation to ensure responsible smartphone use and resultant safe cyberspace.
